Start with the passenger and location
Define the viewing distance, expected dwell time, accessibility needs and information hierarchy. At a bus stop this may include real-time departures and disruption messages. Inside a vehicle it may include the next stop, route progress, connections, safety information and advertising.
Define the operating environment
For outdoor displays, consider sunlight, water, temperature, vandal resistance and servicing. For onboard equipment, identify voltage, mounting, vibration, electromagnetic compatibility, fire behaviour and the approvals required for the vehicle and market.
Separate display hardware from the data platform
The display should be selected around the required content and environment while remaining compatible with the chosen passenger-information platform, CMS and player. Clear responsibility for data, software, connectivity, monitoring and device control prevents gaps during integration.
Plan for the operating life
Include remote diagnostics, brightness and temperature monitoring, access to replaceable components, mounting strategy and expected component availability. A serviceable design can reduce disruption and whole-life cost across a fleet or network.
